Bachelorette (Die Hochzeit unserer dicksten Freundin)

alt

Starts October 25

Original language: English

Regan, Katie and Gena – members of a high school clique class of ’99 – have been asked to be bridesmaids in Becky’s (Rebel Wilson) NYC wedding. Still in shock that fat Becky is the first of them to get married, they arrive before the “big day”, to arrange for a raunchy bachelorette party that distributes anything but joy, and destroys the wedding dress in their wake. The thin storyline is their race to have the dress restored in time. Control freak Regan (Kirsten Dunst) is in charge, with more or rather less, help from her equally hard partying friends: dimwitted sex-kitten Katie (Isla Fisher), and high-strung cokehead Gena (Lizzy Caplan). One never understands how the bride got accepted into this circle (nor why anybody would want to) and why they all hang out together to begin with.

Even though they are not given much ‘to work with’ Caplan and Fisher, and especially Dunst do give great performances; but their sorry characters are offensively stereotypical self-absorbed, catty, shallow and crass. They are presented as a standard, not the sad exception they (hopefully) are. The males in the wedding party are no winners either and mostly just as shallow and gross as ‘the trio’. Writer/ director Leslye Headland tries to give the film an unconvincing romantic twist towards the end, but it doesn’t really ‘gel’ with the rest of the movie.
