Attention AWCH members: have you just moved to Hamburg and do you find the transition to a new city and country a bit difficult? Or would you like to offer assistance to a newcomer in Hamburg? Our club matches new members with members who have already been living in Hamburg to help newbies with the practical transition to a new city/country.
The AWC Hamburger Helper Team is looking forward to hearing from you – please don’t hesitate to contact us! We can help you find the markets, schools, hairdressers, doctors, dentists, how to travel by bus and trains. We are there to listen to your woes and to meet with you and have a chat over coffee. We have all been in the position of being the "new" person in town so we are ready and willing to help you. We are located in several of the neighbourhoods all over the city.
Each month, English-speaking newcomers, just like we all were at one time, arrive in Hamburg, brought by work, family, or love! One thing they usually have in common is a sense of bewilderment and disorientation brought on by all the things we now take for granted: new language, new culture, complicated bureaucratic system, mystifying social norms, and more. While German spouses can often provide much assistance, there is a special understanding and empathy that can only come from a fellow expat, nothing can replace a sisterly telephone call and advice of someone who already has all the answers.
With the AWC Membership Chair as Liaison Officer, the Hamburger Helper Coordinator matches new members and Hamburger Helpers, based, if possible, on area of residence, family status, personal background and interests or career. If you have just joined the AWC, your contact details will already be on the way to the Hamburger Helper Coordinator who tries her best to find YOUR Hamburger Helper, who will contact you soon. Your Hamburger Helper is looking forward to meeting you, perhaps for coffee - she will assess on which particular area/ topic you need assistance and she will offer to accompany you to one of the next Club events in order to introduce you to other AWC Club Members.
