The French comic-star, filmmaker and scrip writer Joann Sfar tells an entertaining, modern fairy-tale about the many facets of Serge Gainsbourg’s life. Éric Elmosnino fills the role of France’s biggest pop icon, song writer and poet dramatically well. To watch this movie is great fun! You listen to enjoyable music, watch clever graphics, laugh and cry with the extraordinary extrovert singer. The son of Russian-Jewish parents grew up in Nazi-occupied Paris. During the crazy ‘60s and ‘70s his popularity brought him in touch with the darlings of society and we enjoy watching a sensuous Laetitia Casta as Brigitte Bardot. The beautiful and elegant Jane Birkin is portrayed by Lucy Gordon. This film has been made with a “twinkle in the eye” and is a true feast for the senses; an apt homage of a controversial charismatic character. This is Joann Sfar’s first feature film and opened the 2010 Hamburg Filmfest.
P.S. It’s amusing to watch the constant smoking going on – after all, Gainsbourg even composed a song about his beloved brand of cigarettes. How things have changed.
