Richard Curtis (director/writer), Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner (producers) – the successful team behind Four Weddings and a Funeral and Nottinghill - created this charming British comedy.
When Tim (Gleeson) turns 21, his father (Nighy) reveals to him that traditionally males in the family have had the ability to go back in time, and instructs him ‘how to’. Tim, socially awkward and shy (the role Hugh Grant assumed in the aforementioned films), commentates the story in a self-depreciating and humorous way. He very much wishes for a girlfriend but always stands in his own way or ‘misses the boat’.
This fabulous ‘gift’ makes it possible for him to go back to a situation and influence the outcome of his advances. Naturally his ‘fixes’ will also have unexpected and unwanted consequences, and there is no immunity from sadness either. The adorable Rachel McAdams (Mary) is not the only but the subject of his pursuits. ( )
