It’s the big weekend and Chris (Kaluuya) is going to meet his girlfriend Rose’s (brilliantly played by Williams) parents in their house in the country. He is afraid that the parents could have problems with him being black especially when he finds out Rose did not tell them about his skin color.
The visit starts out like any normal meet-the-parents-for-the-first-time would be: awkward. The fact that he is black seems to be of no issue for the Armitage family and Chris is beginning to feel more and more comfortable around them. Mrs. Armitage (Keener), a psychotherapist, offers to help Chris quit smoking by hypnotizing him. Though he kindly refuses, he later finds himself in the middle of an unwanted hypnosis which leaves him confused and creeped out at the same time, wondering what really happened during the session. When he meets the family’s friends at a garden party, it becomes evident that there is more to these people than meets the eye. The only other black guest is suffering a seizure, or so they say, and Chris and Rose are quick to pack their things to leave. If only they had left sooner.
Unfortunately, the conclusion could not live up to my expectations which the unbelievable brilliantly built up suspense created throughout the story. Nevertheless, the shock moments are spread out in perfect timing and fans of the genre should give this Horror-Mystery a chance. ()
