NELLY RAPP – MONSTER AGENT (NELLY RAPP – MONSTERAGENTIN)
Amanda Adolfsson, Sweden 2020
Based on the popular children series by Martin Widmark, NELLY RAPP – MONSTER AGENT follows the eponymous Nelly (Matilda Gross) as she discovers the secrets of her family and the world. When her father drops her off at her mysterious Uncle Hannibal’s house for autumn break, she quickly realizes that there is something odd going on. With a little bit of exploration, she soon finds out that she comes from a long line of monster hunters. Nelly is enthralled by her new outlook on the world and the precocious girl starts to investigate these monsters on her own. Yet the more she learns about monsters, the more she starts to question whether they are actually to be feared after all.
A perfect blend of comedy and spookiness, NELLY RAPP – MONSTER AGENT is great fun for the whole family. Matilda Gross is absolutely charming as the titular character and the film as a whole manages to balance on the fine line between silliness and sincerity. Where many children’s films are a bit too schmaltzy for parents to enjoy, NELLY RAPP manages to evoke a humor which can be enjoyed by both parents and children.
