Nefer is a young, female mummy living in an ancient Egyptian tomb with other mummies, led by her father, the Pharaoh. According to tradition, he seeks a husband for his daughter. Nefer resists marriage, saying, “We need change.” Still, the chosen candidate is Thut, once a successful horse racer, but now driver of a horse and wagon. He has a younger brother, Sekham. Due to an unfortunate event, they all go into the world of the living, which happens to be modern-day London (although they believe it’s Rome). In this new world, they are confronted with trucks, buses, cameras, and mobile phones. A bit familiar is a theater presenting the musical Aida, perfect for Nefer, who is a talented singer. Meanwhile Lord Sylvester Carnaby, accompanied by fat twins Danny and Dennys, stalks them everywhere in his search for one of their possessions.
What fun, which never ceases in wonderful brightly colored animation: Galocha’s film debut! We enjoy a talking crocodile and the magic of Sekham’s boomerang. There is a Papyrus Store and an Egyptian museum. All action is accompanied by fine music including the song “Walk Like an Egyptian.” The word “mummy” is similar to “mommy” and she also pops up. The kids in my audience laughed throughout and you will, too. Perfect for all ages from six onwards. (
