Florian’s (Nico Marischka) parents take off for vacation in Gran Canaria while Florian decides to visit Aunt Cosima (Katharina Schüttler) in southern Tirol. Their household manager, Gerhardt (Justus von Dohnányi), drives him there, along with Flo’s best friend: Lassie, a Collie dog. Gerhardt stays in the area, residing at the Grand Hotel Sternberg. Cosima also accommodates her two foster children, Kleo (Anna Lucia Gualano) and Henri (Pelle Staacken). They, too, have a dog, a Jack Russel Terrier named Pippa. So, the house is full, and the adventures can begin. And they do! Two mysterious masked burglars break into the house and steal Pippa. Policeman Stefano (Beniamino Brogi) arrives to check the situation. He knows Cosima well, having dated her. He also has experience with this case, as several dogs have been stolen. Naturally, Kleo and Flo race off to find Pippa. Lassie is kidnapped and driven off in a van, leaving young Henri all alone.
The action takes place in the beautiful environment of northern Italy on the border to Austria. Lassie dominates the story, of course, being more intelligent than the people. Here we also experience at least 20 other types of dogs. Lassie originates from a short story “Lassie Come Home” by Eric Knight from 1938. There have been over 20 Lassie movies and series, in film and television, the first coming out in 1943. Hopefully, they will continue, as Lassie is wonderful for all viewers of any age. I admit I have a special relationship, having grown up with several Collies, all named Lassie. (Becky T.)
