“Me, my German Husband, and the Rest of the World“

A workshop on Cross-Cultural Differences and Similarities between Americans, Germans, and the Rest of the World

All family relationships can be named cross-cultural; both spouses come from different families with individual ideas about self-worth, identity, boundaries, goals and parenting approaches. Difference attracts and fascinates us when we fall in love. However, living in the intercultural relationship is far more challenging.  Living in a foreign country is similar to marrying into a foreign family: sometimes you notice that you desperately try to observe unpronounced rules and nevertheless fail to some cultural norms.

According to the pooled World values and European values surveys, in 2000 the United Stated scored 73 on a subjective well-being scale, and Germany only 63. What does it mean to us? That in general, Germans feel less happy than Americans; and that the music of the same relationships can be perceived through a differently by both partners. Nations differ in perception of happiness, a degree of emotional expression, attitudes towards health, women roles, ambiguity, time orientation, and many others. Let us have a look at what the research and our experience tell us, let us find a meaning in some attitudes and behaviors, to know ourselves better and to accept our partners and neighbors the way they are.

The workshop is not a therapy session, you would not be asked to disclose your personal histories in front of other participants, the goal of the workshop is to understand how your own relationship is influenced by your own culture, the culture of your husband, and the culture of the country we a living in.
