Currently showing at the Deichtorhallen are two exhibitions of photographs addressing themes related to the foreboding that many Americans have been feeling since the election in November.

The first, “Viral Hallucinations”, shows how photographs from a road trip through the US have become conveyors of alternative facts and instruments of conspiracy theories instead of the reliable documents of reality they once were.

“High Noon” takes an unrelenting look at New York subculture of the 1980s and 90s and themes of addiction, AIDS and transsexuality. This show features the work of Nan Goldin, famous for her role in dethroning the philanthropic Sackler family behind the opioid crisis. In November she made the national German news by using the opening of an exhibition of her work at the national gallery in Berlin as a platform to express her views on the war in Gaza.

Tour guide Veronika Schöne is offering us a double header tour of both exhibitions.  Many of us will remember this captivating guide, who took us through the Cindy Sherman exhibition.
