Details:
Discover Hamburg by Bike—Ohlsdorf CemeteryHamburg’s and the World’s Largest Garden CemeterySaturday, October 10th at 11:00
The Ohlsdorf Cemetery was established as a non-denominational and multi-regional burial site outside of Hamburg in 1877. Its first director, architect Wilhelm Cordes, transformed a treeless, sandy plain into 92 acres of sculpted, wooded landscape. Today the cemetery has an area of 966 acres with 17 km of streets that takes one to the many chapels, various burial sites with their striking sculptures and impressive mausoleums—and through the park-like landscape with ponds, trees, roses, rhodendron bushes, and birds. Our tour guide will be our AWCH member Melanie M., who grew up near the cemetery and has promised to give us an “insider tour.” The ca. 90-min. tour will start off with a short historical introduction to the cemetery and lead us to some of the thematic gravesites, including Hamburg’s Honorary Cemetery, the Women’s Garden, and the rose and butterfly gardens. If you are interested in seeing specific graves (e.g. Helmut and Loki Schmidt, Carl Hagenbeck, Albert Balinn, Gustaf Gründgens, Ida Ehre, etc., please contact Melanie.) Registration is limited to 10 persons and thus restricted to AWCH members only. Please register below by pressing the YES button. Registration closes on Friday, Oct 9. Please cancel your registration in time so that others can take your place. Cost: The tour is free. |
