Details: Join us for a Talk on Historically Black Colleges and UniversitiesPlease join us for an event to celebrate Black History Month, which is commemorated every year during the month of February. AWCH member Ericka will present a virtual slide show and talk on the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the US. The Higher Education Act of 1965 defines an HBCU as “any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans”. Ericka will begin her talk with an introduction to Black History Month, followed by an overview of the HBCUs, focusing on their history, curricula, and campus life. The talk will present notable graduates of these institutions, such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Stacey Abrams, Spike Lee, Samuel Jackson, Toni Morrison, Oprah Winfrey, and Vice President Kamala Harris, who graduated from Howard University in 1986. Ericka is herself a graduate of Atlanta’s Spelman College, the top-ranking HBCU in the nation. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A moderated by Dr. Nikoo Paydar, an American Art Historian based in Heidelberg. Please sign up on the AWCH website in order to receive the Zoom link in advance of the presentation. Guests of AWCH members are also welcome to attend (please just have them register with their email addresses so that they receive the link). This event is free of cost.
