Details: Iphigenia in SplottAll April Fools to the Theater!(Photo by Conrad Lüneburg)What better way to have some fun on April Fools’ Day than a visit to Sprechwerk to enjoy the latest Couch Theatre of Hamburg production, Iphigenia in Splott! This is a one-woman show in English with a new take on the classical figure of Iphigenia. Here’s the production text: Iphigenia in Splott was written for the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff, where it enjoyed two sell-out runs. It then went on to the Edinburgh Fringe and the National Theatre in London. It won Best New Play at the UK Theatre Awards in 2015. The original production was also included in The Guardian’s 50 Best Theatre Shows of the 21st Century. Effie, if you met her on the street, is the kind of girl you would avoid eye contact with. Her life is a mixture of drugs, alcohol and drama. She will give you the finger without batting an eyelid. But, like so many let down by society and the government, despite all her bravado she ultimately has no voice and no one to speak for her. However, our Greek heroine, via a poor British suburb, finally finds her voice and when she does there’s no stopping her. Gary Owen’s tense, heartbreaking yet witty monologue feels, as The Guardian five-star review put it, almost like the beginning of a revolution. In Greek mythology, Iphigenia was Agamemnon’s daughter, sacrificed to ensure a fair wind to Troy and to further the ambitions of men. Who, we must ask ourselves, in today’s society are continually being sacrificed in order for others to pursue the insatiable desire for growth and profit? Read more about this production and purchase a ticket here: https://sprechwerk.hamburg/produktionen/iphigenia-in-splott For convenience and input of Covid data we ask you to purchase your ticket yourself, in advance. Tickets are unnumbered and cost 19,40€ (print at home). The Sprechwerk is a small theater and spaces are limited, so it’s first come, first served. Come along, bring a friend or partner, and have a wonderful evening! This production is currently 2G with masking; in any case we will adhere to the valid rules for Covid (AWCH and Sprechwerk) that will apply on April 1. Please sign up below to let us know you are coming (but you still have to buy a ticket!). If you’d like to meet up before the play for a light snack or a drink, then let us know at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Hope to see you there! |
