This month Harbor Explorers will meet up in one of the oldest streets in Hamburg, Deichstrasse. This
street was first documented in 1304 as ‘Diekstraat’, and the first breweries were established here in the
14th century. When you view the older houses on the side facing Nikolaifleet the half-timbered structures,
the pulleys and chutes are visible; from the Deichstrasse side the houses have representative facades
that show off the former owners’ wealth and prestige.                                                                                                                                                                                                                          
We will meet up for lunch at 12:00 at Cantine Papa Lisbeth, which opened in 2021 and has an
inexpensive and creative lunch menu.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  
After lunch we can take a stroll through Deichstrasse, and then those who wish can cross the street to
the Nikolaiturm, a historic war monument with a glass elevator to the top of the tower for a panoramic
view of the entire area. There is an exhibition in the basement with historic pictures of the devastation
caused by the bombing in WWII and topics of interest concerning that period in Hamburg.
