This is Monteverdi, composer of the first really great opera, L'Orfeo

The AWC Opera Club is ready to go back and visit the true roots of opera. Our fall/winter project will start off with the very first operas and go on to discover the elaborate operas of the later baroque period. In the new year, we will continue with composer C.W. Gluck and his groundbreaking masterpiece Orphée et Eurydice, finishing up by attending a performance of this work. Laden with colorful characters, fascinating historical details, and of course entrancing music, the themes of this project will take us all on a fascinating operatic trip back through time.
