Details: The LIght of Truth: Richard Hunt's Monument to Ida B. Wells
The Amerikazentrum Hamburg invites us to join them at the film screening of The LIght of Truth, in realm of the American commemoration of Juneteenth and the 30th anniversary of the Sister City partnership between Hamburg and Chicago. This 70-minute documentary contrasts and compares the life of Chicago sculptor Richard Hunt with that of Ida B. Wells, the subject of one of his outstanding monuments designed to honor Ida's heroic fight for justice, as told by her great-granddaughter Michelle Duster and fellow historians. Ida Bell Wells-Barnett (July 16, 1862 – March 25, 1931) was an American investigative journalist, educator, and early leader in the civil rights movement. She was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Wells dedicated her career to combating prejudice and violence, and advocating for African-American equality—especially that of women. A man known for making monuments and a monument himself among the world’s most creative icons, Richard Hunt completed more public sculptures than any other artist in the country. His sculptural works honor and memorialize some of Chicago’s most historically significant figures that will inspire generations, at a time when other monuments are being examined for their injustice and falsehoods. The film is directed and produced by Rana Segal, and produced by Laurie Little and Vincent Singleton. The film is in English. For location, sign-in. |
