Details:
Hamburg shippers and traders played a central role in bringing objects looted from the Kingdom of Benin by the British to Europe, and Hamburg will be the first German city to return its considerable collection of Benin artefacts to Nigeria. Learn about the history of Benin, its looting in 1897 and the collection, currently exhibited in its entirety at Hamburg’s Museum am Rothenbaum für Kunst und Kulturen (MARKK), in a tour in English by Curatorial Assistant Alexandra Dally. Due to the popularity of our June event, we have scheduled this second tour in conjunction with the talk at MARRK in English by visiting speaker, Dan Hicks, author of The Brutish Museums: The Benin Bronzes, Colonial Violence and Cultural Restitution. At this time, it is not necessary to register for the talk but we will inform you if this changes.Open to all members and their guests. Cost: € 10.50 p.P. (€ 8.50 admission plus €2 tour) Payment: Money should be transferred at the time of registration to the AWCH bank account (IBAN: DE75 2069 0500 0000 9117 71) with the reference “Benin Tour”. Meeting Point: Entrance, 4:15 pm |
